Trout & About

Our environmental commitments

At Wansford Trout, sustainability isn’t an afterthought—it’s built into everything we do. From the way we manage our water to how we raise and feed our fish, every step is designed to minimise environmental impact while maintaining the highest standards of quality.

Our location plays a key role. We use naturally pure chalk spring water, which flows continuously through our farm. After use, it is carefully filtered and returned to the environment, helping to protect the surrounding ecosystem and preserve water quality.

We also take a responsible approach to fish welfare and stocking. By keeping densities low, we reduce stress on the fish and limit the environmental pressure on the water. This creates a healthier, more balanced system overall.

Sustainability extends to how we feed our trout. We use high-quality, responsibly sourced feed, ensuring our fish receive optimal nutrition without relying on unsustainable inputs. Combined with our commitment to natural growth—without genetic modification or growth hormones—this supports a more responsible form of aquaculture.

Unlike some large-scale operations, our farming methods avoid many of the common environmental concerns associated with seafood production. There is no bycatch, no damage to marine habitats, and no risk of farmed fish escaping into wild populations.

We are also independently certified to recognised standards, ensuring our practices are regularly assessed for environmental responsibility, food safety, and fish welfare.

By working with nature rather than against it, we are able to produce high-quality trout in a way that is both sustainable and responsible—protecting the environment while delivering a product we’re proud of.
